Introduction: As the world becomes more globalized, the demand for language speakers has increased, especially from companies, as they expand operations into new markets. These companies therefore need language speakers to satisfy the demands of their clients across the world. It is much easier to build a relationship with somebody when you speak the same language as them. You can simply connect with them on a more personal level and break through communication barriers if you speak the same language. Learning a new language also demonstrates that you have a host of other skills. According to studies, multi-linguals are better at problem solving, more creative and are better multi-taskers. All of these skills are very attractive to any potential employer.

British rule has spread the English language all over the world. It was enforced to be taught in education, and all the laws and rules meant for enactment were published in English. Though the English rule was not acceptable to the natives of respectable countries, the English language stayed with them as it was a convenient means of communication even in between nations of different languages. Further, the English language has played an essential role in the spread of formal education.

The curriculum of the Mizoram University to which the college is affiliated has included oral communication as a component of the Foundation Course paper for all streams. Additionally, the syllabus for BCA also includes communication Skills which entails the teaching of oral communication. As such the task of language development fell on the English department and the department has been utilizing the resources received from RUSA to develop the language skills of the students. Throughout the entire semester Spoken English classes and oral communication skills have been imparted to the students in the language lab.

Mode of Teaching: The Software uploaded in the language Laboratory has been used as primary sources. Materials gathered from other sources have also been used to teaching oral communication skills in English. Since the language laboratory can accommodate only 20 students at a time, students are divided into batches. At other times power point presentations are provided in the bigger classrooms.

Course Content: The course content comprises of the basics of phonetics, rules of pronunciation, Verbal and non-verbal skills and tips to facing interviews.

Target Group: The first semester students of Physical and life Science, Home science and BCA have been chosen to undergo the course on oral communication skills as it serves the double purpose of completing their syllabus and equipping them with skills required to communicate effectively in English.

Course Outcome: A large majority of students come from the rural areas where English is not used frequently. Hence most of the students are not comfortable in using the language orally. The course has helped students to use the language more effectively and helped them in facing the Mock Interview exams held towards the end of the semester more confidently.

By the end of the semester the three teachers of English Department who are involved in implementing the course have been able to conduct 10 contact hours each with all the four batches of students. The Course has proved to be successful and the department is committed towards further improvement of the course.

It is envisaged that the knowledge and skills gained from the institution, with the degree obtained, would facilitate students for future employment opportunities. The main objectives of the college are:

  1. To be at par with esteemed colleges outside the state in terms of teaching-learning process and, also in terms of research output.
  2. To continuously strive to provide a platform for more choices and opportunities, particularly for students who cannot afford to pursue higher studies elsewhere.
